Food and drinks ... and everything in between 😋

For bean pods and tomatoes we have to dive in some canning recipes, this one is for medium level.
Chopped the tomatoes and peppers, mixed well.

Prepare some jars, at the bottom one bayleaf and some black pepper seeds.
One layer of mixture, bean pods until almost full, one more layer of tomatoes mixture.
Add salt (one tablespoon for each jar is good enough).. some water, seal the jars.
Sterilize (with Bain Marie or in the oven, up to you)
Should look like this:

This can be stored in the pantry or whatever dark place you have for up to two years, provided properly sealed and sterilized.

To use them, slice some onion, saute, add the content of a jar, garlic if you like and whatever else.
Can be served like that as a vegetarian dish or side dish with a stake.
Or as a base for soups, stews… use your imagination..

cannot say more…

Some bean jars had some failure.
After sterilizing, were not sealed properly, mostly because i re-used old lids.
So, went, to the market, buyed new.
With this oportunity i slighltly changed the recipe. Took out the brine and filled with tomatoe juice instead.
Will go back in the oven for sterilizing.

For zuchinni’s, is work in progress, will let you know what we did.

Mhm… sterilizing the jars in the oven made me think my oven somehow lies to me.
So, I remembered in a previous life I was an electrical engineer, digging into my toolbox found some stuff:

Looks like, between the dial settings and the inside air temperature I have a difference of 30 deg. (celsius or Fahrenheit, no matter)

May not be critical for usual cooking, but for sterilizing this info may be very important.

Good to know…

So, if you are not sure on your oven capabilities, simply use the bain marie tehnique. The water boils at 100 C usually unless you alter the surrounding pressure, therefore prividing a better refference for hobby cooking (physics basic)

Perfect. This guy knows his stuff.

In the UK, at sea level, my rice, on a super-low simmer, would be done in 12 minutes.

My first house here, at 3000 feet, ~25 minutes.

We have the same volt/ammeter. What’s weird is, I’ve never replaced the battery (PP3). I bought it in the UK ~15 years ago. I used it about a week ago and it’s still good. :astonished:

Btw, owen → oVen

Mine is almost same age, ‘war’ capture from when I quit my first job as electrical engineer.
I consider it a bonus.
I think I replaced the battery once or twice, for the rest it is in perfect condition.

Yeah, owen/ oven… sometime i am distracted… and the autocorrect on my phone is dumb.
It provides various suggestions (sometime hilarious) when I do not need, but not when is required.

I feel like at this point, @anon46315158 could start your own blog/forum to document your cooking journeys based on how much efforts you put into them (or perhaps you have already had one :eyes:)

My wife is in charge with this, therefore the vlog.
Altough she does not document in details, is doing this for fun and to provide inspiration to others.
I am in charge with the ‘logistic’

Last week I organized my birthday party and decided to try out Costco for the food.

I got a platter of rollers with chicken and Swiss, which were super tasty. Also grabbed two croissant sandwich platters with roasted beef and cheddar. The taste was rich and fresh. Also, I opted for a few shrimp cocktail platters, and they paired perfectly with their cocktail dip.

This was my first time exploring their premade food, and I genuinely enjoyed everything. This article about the Costco catering order form has photos and prices of what I ordered. :yum:

I would say you are taking advantage of your Costco membership quite well! Do you do most, if not all, of your grocery shopping in Costco?

I remember reading an article on Insider about Costco’s cake-ordering process and it was rather … interesting?

I guess in the world filled with “automate-this, automate that”, sometimes, manual work still take the cake

That said, do share more images of your adventure to Costco’s food section if possible

Yeah, I do my groceries only at Costco. I used to do them at Kroger, but I started to find Costco prices and products better.

Costco is good for bulk purchases

Are you hunting for Kudos points or … have some valuable input?
I don’t care about other topics, but at least on this one, we may like to be sort of ‘share personal experience’ with some details (pics helps)
So here you can open a bit ‘your soul’…
can you do that?

E.g I can also say ’ food from X is better than Y’ but what will be the point?
We may expect that your sentence it is followed with examples.
Otherwise … yeah, ok, is just an opinion … we cannot learn nothing from such unless is followed by ‘because …’

try to type a bit more context, will not hurt your fingers … can you?
and don’t be scared about others opinions, because … humans we are, everybody with a different taste.
but we like to debate!

there are so many ways to get kudos with well written documentation here. few folks like to elaborate their interests and few doesn’t. it’s upto them and their view . all fingers aren’t of equal size!!

@dineshh @samconnely

I’m going to ask you guys to take a step back and reread the thread. While this is meant to be a bit of fun, we “amateur chefs” take this stuff quite seriously.

Try to stay on topic theme by making posts with at least some connection to home-cooking/street food/exceptional restaurant food, etc.

Sorry, but Costco/supermarket pre-made party food junk is hardly the stuff of dreams – the list of ingredients alone gives me nightmares :scream:

Advice: next time you’re in the market/supermarket/Costco/Walmart, check the label. The stuff with excessive labeling with wild claims about how fabulous it tastes or how good it is for you is not good for you. Compare it to an apple. Or a cabbage. Food that’s good for you does not need labeling – or an ingredients list.

I get it Russ, you’re a health-nerd.

Nope. I’m an informed shopper. I eat some pretty nasty fast-food junk. I just wanted to point out that Costco pre-made party junk is “off theme”.

fair enough. but did you get the idea of this topic?

it was ment to be for sharing and move forward from potential blockers.

most probably, because of that.

this is why is in the ‘lounge’ section, to disconnect ourselves from ‘standard’ formula.

there is no right or wrong here.
it is about sharing.
the more input, more share.
you are not comfortable to share, it is totally fine.
but we would be glad if you can do it so we can learn from you also.

positive or negative feedback, no matter, as long as it came from a honest experience.
and preferably, the choices / decisions should be argumented, otherwise is worse than facebook.

aside of that, more arguments or opinions, more reasons to debate.
because we like it

Now, back on the topic.
About Costco… well, I never tried becase ther is no such in my country.
So I wil assume it ia just another catering or junk food delivery service, but it is not the single one in the universe.
(personal note, street/fast food <> junk food. street food can be sometime great)
Fine, when I am lazy I also order from such. To provide brand makes no sense because are local brands.

This topic is about somethig else…
What dou you really like?
What do you cook?
What is your fave child dish? Have you tried to make it?

and so on…

Hey folks,

Seems like there was a bit of a ruckus happening while I was away :exploding_head:

Well, given the title of this topic, one would think that Cosco’s pre-made food, along with fast food, etc. also fit the bill. Hence, why Dinesh and Samconnely replied the way they did.

But as Bionel mentioned, it would be good if you could include some pictures with your replies to further illustrate your points.

That said, over the course of three (or more) months when this topic was first created, with mostly contribution from Russ, Bionel, and occasionally myself,

That said, the bulk of our conversations up till now in this thread has mainly revolved around restaurants, homemade food or preparation. And so that has shaped the “vibe”, or “norm” of this thread to the point where newcomers are, I believe, ridiculed, for making comments that fell outside of the “norm”. :person_shrugging: → Which we don’t recommend to be honest.

Sooo, my suggestions for Dinesh and Sam would be to create another thread in Miscellaneous to share about your adventures in Costco, or even Ikea (I heard their meatballs are quite good :yum:), and others will be more than happy to chime in.

Regardless, we still encourage you two to encourage to this thread and share with us which dishes you recently had, or made yourselves, etc.

Cheers

Side note, when we say junk food, it doesn’t mean that it is really junk.
It just a particular segment of cooking and it cand be delicious.
Healthy? eeh, who cares…
I do have an entire book dedicated for this:

Meeh, I think won’t be fair.
Sounds like we kicked them out from here …
As long as it is about food, fine for me to be in this topic, but more input is appreciated.
Pics, why did you liked it (or not) and so on.
On short, share your personal experience with the mentioned dishes, no matter from where they are, not just a link to whatever store …
