This morning, my version of Katalon Studio Free popped up a warning to download the new version. It was either download or close the programme. When I clicked to download, it took me to the download website. I chose my Windows x64 package and version. The installer downloaded, but when the installation started, it got stuck on the image. I tried it as an administrator, downloading manually… it’s been like this for an hour.

The “in-app upgrade” of Katalon Studio is known to be buggy. You shouldn’t use it.
You should remove the current installation directory. You should download the installer Katalon Studio of the version you prefer. Then cleanly install it.

I also got the same issue. I’ve downloaded the 9.7.6 from the link you posted but it is for enterprise not the free version. I tried to log in but the trial expired message appear.
You can get the distributable of Katalon Studio Free v9.7.5 from the GitHub Releases page: Releases · katalon-studio/katalon-studio · GitHub
Please note that “free-v9.7.5” is seperated from “v9.7.5“.
I believe that there is no “v9.7.6” distributed.
Katalon’s web page made a careless mistake.
to me its showing following popup on 9.7.4 free version
when i click download it takes me to katalon studio enterprise edition download page.
apparently there is no free version of 9.7.6 that i can find and download
so i am stuck and not being able to open my project
also i can not upgrade to version 10.x.x as i my project is in selenium 3 and i will have to migrate to selenium 4
