Getting exception error this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 65.0

I am getting below error.I have updated to java25.

Getting geh/data/ViewException has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 69.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 65.0
geh/data/ViewException has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 69.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 65.0 error .

This error means the application is still running on Java 21, even though you installed Java 25.

From the error:
• Class-file version 69.0 = compiled for Java 25 (geh/data/ViewException).
• Maximum supported version 65.0 = the Java 21 runtime that is trying to load it.

Installing a newer JDK does not automatically change the Java used by an IDE, test runner, or application.

Next steps

  1. Run java -version and javac -version in the terminal where you start the application. Check JAVA_HOME and the Java executable location (where java on Windows; which java on macOS/Linux).
  2. Check the runtime/JRE configured in the application or IDE’s run configuration. It may use a bundled Java 21 even if your terminal shows Java 25.
  3. If the application supports Java 25, point its runtime configuration to that JDK and restart it. If it requires Java 21, use a Java-21-compatible build of the library containing geh/data/ViewException, or rebuild that library targeting Java 21 if its code/dependencies allow it.

**Where do you see this error? Katalon Studio, an IDE, a command-line run, or CI?

** Please share the application/version and java -version output so I can help identify the exact setting to change. If this is Katalon Studio, please include its version before changing its bundled runtime.

well covered solution, it will resolve i guess

I have tried given steps still same error exists .I get error in Katalon studio

error means Katalon Studio is still executing with Java 21, while one of the JARs/classes in your project or plugins was compiled for Java 25.

  • Class file version 69.0 = Java 25

  • Class file version 65.0 = Java 21

  • Java 21 cannot load Java 25 class files, so it throws UnsupportedClassVersionError

Changing JAVA_HOME in your terminal usually will not fix it because Katalon Studio commonly uses its own bundled runtime or its own configured JRE, not the terminal’s Java.

First: identify the offending JAR

The stack trace names the class:

text

geh/data/ViewException

Find which JAR contains it:

powershell

# From your Katalon project folder
Get-ChildItem -Recurse -Include *.jar | ForEach-Object {
$jar = $_.FullName
$hit = & "C:\path\to\jdk-21\bin\jar.exe" tf $jar 2>$null | Select-String "geh/data/ViewException"
if ($hit) { "$jar => $hit" }
}

Then check that JAR’s class-file version:

powershell

& "C:\path\to\jdk-21\bin\javap.exe" -v -cp "path\to\offending.jar" geh.data.ViewException | Select-String "major"

If it says major version: 69, that JAR is built for Java 25.

Most likely fixes

Option A: Remove or replace the Java 25 JAR

If the JAR is in your project’s Drivers folder, Plugins folder, or a custom plugin, replace it with a build compatible with Java 21.

  • Ask the vendor for a Java 21-compatible build.

  • Or rebuild the library with:

bash

javac --release 21 ...

--release 21 produces class files that Java 21 can load.

This is the safest fix if Katalon Studio must remain on its supported Java 21 runtime.

Option B: Make Katalon actually use Java 25

Only do this if your Katalon version officially supports Java 25. Do not assume it does.

  1. Close Katalon Studio.

  2. Locate the Java runtime Katalon is actually launching.

  3. Update Katalon’s launcher/configuration to point to JDK 25.

  4. Restart Katalon and confirm inside the environment that it is using Java 25.

The important point is that installing JDK 25 elsewhere does not automatically change the runtime used by Katalon Studio.

Option C: Check Katalon’s configured JRE

In Katalon Studio:

  1. Go to Preferences → Java → Installed JREs.

  2. Add your JDK 25 installation, if supported.

  3. Select it as the active JRE.

  4. Restart Katalon Studio.

However, if Katalon launches through its bundled JRE, changing only the Installed JRE list may not affect the Studio process itself. In that case, Option A is the safer route.

What to share next

To pinpoint it exactly, please share:

  • Full stack trace, especially the first Caused by line

  • Katalon Studio version

  • The exact path of geh/data/ViewException if visible in the trace

  • Output of:

powershell

java -version
where.exe java
echo $env:JAVA_HOME

  • Whether geh/data/ViewException comes from a custom JAR, Katalon plugin, or an external dependency

The cleanest solution is usually: find the Java 25-built JAR and replace/rebuild it for Java 21, unless Katalon explicitly supports running on Java 25

Hi team,

While executing the script, I encountered an error. As part of the troubleshooting, I have already upgraded the Java version to Java 17. However, the issue still persists. Could you please help review the error and suggest the next steps for resolution?
