Mobile testing with Katalon: a learning path from recording to reporting

If you’re starting mobile testing with Katalon, this is a short path through the whole flow: author a test, run it, and read the results. Most links go to Katalon Academy video lessons, so you can watch and follow along, not just read.

The path uses four products: Katalon Studio, Katalon Runtime Engine (KRE), Katalon Test Cloud, and Katalon TestOps.

Tip: let AI do the first pass. Katalon AI Assistant can write a test script from a plain-language prompt, turn a recording into a test that checks real behavior, and explain a failure you didn’t write. Steps marked (AI) below show where it helps. A good place to start is the AI Assistant course on Katalon Academy (1h 10m).

Step 1: Author your tests in Studio

Record a real user journey in your app once, such as sign-in or checkout. Then use AI to turn the recording into a test that verifies the result, not one that only repeats the taps.

Step 2: Run your tests with KRE or Test Cloud

KRE and Test Cloud run the same tests. There’s no fixed order. Pick the one that fits what the test needs. If you’re not sure, read Katalon’s guide to choosing between them.

Choose KRE if you need on-premise control, run in air-gapped or security-restricted environments, or want to run tests from CI/CD.

Choose Test Cloud if you want no setup, real device coverage, and the ability to scale up quickly.

  • Scaling test execution in the cloud (Academy, 23 min)
4 short lessons: move off local machines, schedule recurring runs, test on real mobile devices, and debug live on a real device.

Step 3: Analyze and share results in TestOps

Every run from KRE or Test Cloud ends up in TestOps. Look at it as a trend your team can act on, not only a pass or fail count.
