Read PDFs

With the old Selenium IDE we could read pdf’s. Now the pages that open upon clicking a link to a pdf aren’t even accessible to see the title of the page. Is there something with the new browsers that make these pages inaccessible? I can clearly see the locators and text I’d like to verify but cannot access the page. Thanks.
